TENS application for knee pain

Woman holds her knee because of knee pain, which can be treated with a TENS device

Regardless of whether it is a cruciate ligament tear, bursitis in the patellar tendon or cartilage damage. You can treat knee pain with a TENS device and the right electrodes.

With the help of the electrical impulses from a TENS device , the nerves can no longer pass on the pain, the pain transmission to the brain is blocked and the pain quickly subsides. Another effect of TENS therapy is the release of endorphins [1]. These are endogenous hormones that reduce pain. The stimulation current therapy also promotes blood circulation [2].

Pain relief with a TENS device is therefore as simple as it is effective. With the help of the right electrodes, very good effects can be achieved on the knee. You can treat your sore knee at home, without taking any medication and without frequent visits to the doctor.

The intensity should be adjusted so that it is felt as a pleasant tingling sensation. The duration of the application should be approx. 40 minutes in order to be able to achieve a lasting reduction in pain. It also makes sense to switch programs every now and then.

What causes knee pain and how can I treat it?

Pain in the knees, the kneecap or the hollow of the knee can have many causes. Knee problems often also affect the upper and lower leg of the leg, which can also benefit from TENS treatment[3]. Pain in the knee can come from overexertion, from the wrong shoes, from a lack of warming up before sport, rheumatism, arthrosis, but also simply from being overweight or from wear and tear. Our knees have to withstand a lot of daily stress, which is why the knee is the joint that causes the most problems. Accidents during sports can also cause knee pain and the pain does not subside. Many people suffer from chronic knee pain and are massively affected by it.

A distinction must be made between knee pain that occurs suddenly, acute pain and pain that only occurs under stress. If the pain is persistent, it may be chronic pain. This is when the pain lasts 3 months or more.

How can I treat knee pain?

When it comes to acute knee pain or after a blunt injury, the LUCKY rule applies: rest, ice, compress and elevate. If you suspect an injury, you should see a doctor. If the knee pain occurs regularly, it is also advisable to consult the doctor. With the help of extensive diagnostics, including ultrasound, X-ray, CT or MRI, perhaps also with a joint reflection, he will find out what the problem is. Only then can he decide how to treat the pain. Conservative treatment is ideal in the first place, as you try to delay knee surgery for as long as possible.

There are as many treatment options for painful knees as there are causes for the pain. The following are promising for knee pain:
- TENS therapy
- Physical therapy
- Massages
- acupuncture
- Anti-inflammatory agents
- bandages
- Heat or cold

A simple and effective way to get rid of knee pain permanently is the TENS device for at home. Knee pain can be effectively tackled with this and success is often achieved after a short, consistent use. The advantage: You don't have to worry about any side effects if you use it correctly and you can treat your knee pain without medication.
