TENS pad placement for gout
Can a TENS machine help you for gout?
Mostly an attack of gout comes with painful inflammation of the joints, especially in the toes, fingers, feet and knee joints, in the elbow or in the shoulder. To alleviate the pain, you can start electrotherapy with a TENS machine and the right electrode pads.
In stimulation current therapy, electrical impulses are transmitted to the skin with the help of the TENS machine via electrode pads. There are two effects of pain relief with TENS. With high frequency, the transmission of the pain to your brain can be blocked, so you won’t perceive the pain. With low frequency, a TENS machine stimulates your body externally to release endorphins[1] and as a result relieve your pain. TENS also increases blood flow[2].

What are the causes of gout?
Gout is a metabolic disease, which can occur as primary and secondary gout. When you suffer from gout, too much uric acid is gathered in your body. Uric acid arises from purine metabolism. Purin is in our body cells and the protein proportion of the food. You can affect the uric acid level with your diet. Fat-reduced dairy products promote the excretion of uric acid. Meat, sausage, fish, pulses and alcohol should be consumed in moderation. You should also keep an eye on products with a lot of fructose like juice, sweets and fruit yoghurts. The carbs in the fructose promote the purine synthesis. If the uric acid level is increased it is named hyperuricemia and then crystals were builded. These uric acid crystals deposit in the joints, bursas, tendons, skin and the kidneys. The results are joint pain and deformations, bone damage, bursitis and kidney diseases. An increased uric acid level also increases the risk of a stroke or heart attack.
Combination of TENS and heat therapy
You can enhance the effect of your TENS treatment for gout with heat therapy. Heat therapy promotes blood circulation and loosens the muscles. The use of heat is particularly suitable for muscular tension.
Moor heat pack: Due to the filling of natural moor, these heat pads can store the heat longer and release it more evenly than other heat pads, e.g. cherry pit pads.
Hot water bottle: The hot water bottle is a classic in heat therapy that stands out due to its easy application. You only have to fill in warm water. The hot water bottles are also available with a variety of different covers.
